Explore the Yorkshire Dales in this fully illustrated A-Z guide to the area’s history, people and places.

The breathtaking landscape and attractive small towns and villages draw many visitors to the Yorkshire Dales national park. Contained within its boundaries, a huge variety of people, landscapes and wildlife can be found. From churches that acted as places of rest on long routes, pubs that doubled up as courthouses and Neolithic discoveries in the new extension of the Park, to the longest, hardest, deepest and oddest caves in the region, rare flora and fauna native only to the region (Malham Sedge, Lady’s Slipper orchid and Northern brown argus butterfly for example) – alongside a focus on those that uncovered them – there’s plenty to discover. The A-Z list includes unique experiences in cafes, cheese ‘stops’ and vending machines, mobile creameries (one in a horse box!) and local delicacies; also ancient and semi-ancient woodlands (Grass Wood) as well as those that are being planted, historic meadows, old quarries which are now nature reserves, interesting towns, villages and notable folk.A-Z of the Yorkshire Dales reveals the history behind the area, its streets and buildings, businesses and the people connected with the town. Alongside the famous historical connections, are unusual characters, tucked away places and unique events that are less well-known. It is fully illustrated with photography and will appeal to all those with an interest in this spectacular corner of England.
