Although the putative subject of Cosgrove's (a deputy headteacher in Britain) study is the frequency and symptoms of the nervous breakdowns and stress-related illnesses which have become endemic to British primary and secondary school teachers, one quickly recognizes the book's second theme, the "impossible curriculum [ the Government] has imposed on schools, demanding of teachers impossible achievements in preparation, teaching and assessment." Educators concerned about testing and the additional demands placed on them, both to their workload and psychologically, will find this a compelling read. Annotation c.
